Your house hunt is over and you just took procession of your brand new (to you) home. Congratulations! Or maybe, you're still hunting for your new neighbourhood?

You may have done some research when you were first considering making a move to Durham to choose between Pickering, Ajax, Whitby Oshawa and Clarington but now that you’ve moved in you might find yourself wondering what makes your new neighbourhood so great. I’ll let you in on a little secret… it’s the people that live here, your new neighbours. They are the ones that can tell you all about your new community, the best parks, the best schools, the best restaurants, the best camps for your kids in the summer, the newest ice cream shop, who they used to take their engagement (or maternity) photos and who to call if you need to install pot lights in your basement. Your new neighbours are a wealth of information about the community that you now call home.

Clients, friends and random strangers always seem to be asking me who I know and how I always seem to know somebody that does the thing that somebody needs done. It pretty simple really… as a Realtor, I have access to an extremely valuable resource. That resource is my clients, and friends, that live in all of the neighbourhoods I work in. While I appreciate all of their business, and referrals, the real value that they bring to my real estate business is knowledge and experience of the cities, towns, communities and neighbourhoods that we call home. While I’ve lived, played and worked in Durham most of my life, I haven’t been to every restaurant, shopped at every local business or been to every community event but there is a good chance that at least one of my clients has.

Ever since I started in real estate, more than five years ago, I’ve wanted to write a blog to tell everyone about why they should move to Durham. To share the places, events, experiences and people that make the various neighbourhoods of our towns and cities into true communities. In the first couple years as a Realtor, I was too busy trying to figure out exactly what you need to do in order to sell homes to anyone other than friends and family. Now that I’ve seemingly figured it out I spend most of my time looking at homes for sale, helping clients list their houses for sale and wading through the mountain of paperwork that buying and selling homes creates on my desk. While it is harder than ever to find time for new endeavors, I am determined to find a way to share all that Durham has to offer with all of you.

My goal for the blog is to create a resource for people considering a move to Durham Region, and for those who already live here, to discover what it is that Durham residents love about their communities and neighbourhoods. Our lives are busy and sometimes it seems difficult to get to know all of our neighbours, especially if you are the new neighbour. Luckily for you, I already know some of your neighbours and I plan on asking them to share what they know with you. I’ll be making occasional additions to the blog myself but since I sell Durham real estate, I’m obligated to think that Durham is the best place to live. What I’d really like you to see is what real people think about the places you are thinking about calling home.

So, if you live or work in one of the neighbourhoods listed below, I want to hear from you! How long have you been living and/ or working here? Why did you choose to move here? Which local business do you love to support? Which community organizations do you participate in? What local sports teams do you cheer for? How are the local parks, schools and sport organizations? What are your favourite things things to do in your neighbourhood? In short, I want you to let your neighbours know a little bit about yourself, what you do and why you call your neighbourhood home and why they should too.

If you think you have something to share, please let me know by sending me an email at jordanmatchett@royallepage.ca or send me a text at 647-287-2680. Thanks!
